WASTELAND: MAUSOLEUM (version 0.1) (position E2L4)

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This level is the sequel of `Sands of Death' and MUST be played after that
level, otherwise you will never have enough ammo to complete `Mausoleum'.
The best thing would be to download the entire Wasteland series immediatley:
(DEADBS10.ZIP / MTFIRE09.ZIP / SANDTH09.ZIP), but there is an alternative:
in order to allow you to play this level as a stand-alone WAD file
I placed the ammo needed to play the level near the start point.
You simply need to turn around 180 degrees and walk back outside:
turn on the right and walk 'behind the corner' staying in the shadow,
you will find all the equipment you need.

ANYWAY, the *REAL* player will play all the Wasteland levels and WON'T NEED
to pick up any more ammo to play this level.... :-)

(The required ammo is something like .............., this means to play
the first three levels without wasting too many shots....)

INTRODUCTION (the best would be to print this and read it while playing the
very initial part of the level)

His left hand operated the dark wooden door as he held firmly the
weapon with his right hand. The wooden door slid up into
the ceiling with a whirring noise revealing a dark temple-like
room lit by green flickering torches. A pool of dark blood
occupied a vast part of the floor. Lifeless bodies, showing signs of
plasma-like burns, emerged from the blood, clear sign of a precedent battle.
Maj. Barowsky stood a moment, as his eyes moved upwards towards
a small flashing piece of red rock shaped like a skull.
`That's the key I need' he though advancing like in a trance.
His left foot hit some kind of tripwire which lay on the floor,
hidden by the pool of blood. He immediately realized the mistake.
`Damn, what idiot I am, THIS IS AN AMBUSH!' he thought as monsters
sprang from their hiding places. He jumped aside and prepared
for the battle.
Only two solitary Imp-like beasts emerged from the dark corners
to meet their fate in the shape of shotgun shells. He moved backwards
and pulled out the rocket launcher.

"COME ON BOYS!" he said putting his finger on the trigger.

Nothing emerged from the gloom. Not a sound emanated from the
dark corners. He lowered the weapon and for the first time he
noticed the real amount of bodies lying around.
`What happened here?' he asked himself looking around `no-one could
have succeded in eliminating so many enemies in this small area.'
His eyes focused on a strange blood-stained device emerging from
the sea of blood near one corner.
Looking once more towards the dark corners he advanced towards the
object. The device was near a body in horrible condition.
The body was clearly an human, but it had so many burns and wounds
to be completely unrecognizable.
`No....please no....' he thought as his hand reached the device and
cleared part of the blood stains. A writing appeared on the device,
its meaning the most horrible.....it said 'BFG9000'.
He fell to his knees, dropping the launcher, hands reaching
towards the mangled body on the floor in search of something
which could negate the evidence. He retracted his hands holding a
small metallic ID plate:

    -----------------------------------
   | |
/-/ Confederation of United Planets |
 |O| Lt. Frank Morrison |
 \-\ ID:1423FRMO88876 |
   | |
    -----------------------------------

He stood silent while blood soaked his suit, thoughts going back
in time to him and Frank receiving the assignment, flying
to this damned planet, him teleporting to the surface.
"I will be back in fifteen minutes" he had said.....

`Why didn't you wait for me Frank? Together we could have
gotten out of this alive. Now everything is lost. There's no hope....
I will never get out of here alive alone now.....
And even if, by chance, I am able to survive what will I say
to Jas....' he pulled out the transmitter. Before he reached
the switch he remembered that it didn't work. He put it away
and sat down into the blood.

Time passed as sorrow turned to anger within Maj.Barowsky. The
message he had heard came again to his mind... `"A human will
reach your position soon", yeah, of course, the other
one had already been eliminated.....' He jumped up.

"I don't know what you are, fucking beast, BUT THIS WON'T
PREVENT YOU FROM BEING FUCKING WIPED OFF THE FUCKING FACE
OF THIS FUCKING PLANET!!!!" he shouted in anger.

He took the transmitter and turned it on, but only static came
from the device. "AND THIS STUPID TRANSMITTER!!!! THIS FUCKING
DEVICES ONLY WORK DURING MISSION SIMULATONS!!!" he shouted as
he threw the object against one wall, smashing it into many
small electronic components.

Silence returned as he calmed down. `I must remain calm' he thought
looking at the pieces of his transmitter. `Vitesse said that I'm
better than Frank in battle and I know he's right.
If Frank was able to get here with that BFG weapon I might be
able to continue the work....If I must die I will bring with
me LOTS of this damned beasts.'

He picked up the BFG and examined it. It looked like a super
plasma launcher. It had no trigger, but a big red button was
on top of it, near some complicated display. He touched the display.
Lights blinked and the display showed some letters:

"Status: OK Ammo: 40 (1 Shot) Unloaded"

`Good, it's still operational'. He picked up some more of the equipment
of Frank Morrison, trying not to think about it. He connected
the energy pack to the BFG `Hmmm, I'd better be careful with this,
It won't be easy to find energy ammo on the planet.'
He also picked up the trasmitter and saw that it had a red
light flashing, the one corresponding to the trasmitting
electronics. `This explains why he didn't report back, assuming
that this happened BEFORE this carnage. What is this display
indicating?' he asked himself, pressing a playback button.

The voice of Frank emanated from the device:

"I have just witnessed something which is so horrible that
I still can't believe it. I'm in a secret control room located
within a mysterious pillar in the center of a desert which shouldn't
be here and in the computer I found some strange information
regarding a 'change'. No, I can't believe this.....but according
to this the human-like monsters that have been hunting me
since I got down on the surface ARE the population of the
Prometeus Base altered by some ritual I can't understand.
This would explain the total disappearance of the people of the
base. The strangest part is the one which clearly specifies
what kind of wounds do not allow the 'change'. According
to this fatal wounds to the head prevent this ritual.
I can't understand a word of the description of the ritual,
but if the situation gets hopeless I will make SURE that
I get a fatal wound to my head. <pause> Oh, God, I'm
getting real paranoid.... I will try to get into that
damned green building and then I will wait for Barowsky.
Maybe together we can understand what has happened here.'

He turned off the device and looked again at Morrison's corpse.
`They must have ambushed him while he was waiting for me.....
I took too much time to get here......
And he let them kill him this way to make sure that they
couldn't 'change' him. This is madness. I must check that
computer personally. I will explore this place and then
go back to that control room.'

He also took up a skull-shaped blue rock which was together with
the transmitter and examined the pillar with the red key on top.
`This was only a trap. It's impossible to get that from here.'
he said to himself after a short time. Then, looking once
more onto the body of his friend he tightned his grasp on
the shotgun and left the room.

WELCOME!

In this mission you play the role of Maj. Barowsky as he continues
his search for the source of evil which destroyed the Prometeus Base.

which you have found in Sands of Death in search of the red key
which will give you access to the black building located just outside
the Mausoleum.

Description:
the setting is in a strange, cursed mausoleum. You will
wander around dark underground areas and to comfortable
resting places as you find the horrible secrets hidden in
this place.
This is more similar to a 'classic' level, with corridors, rooms
and secret passages. The lighting is cured, but
without overloading the graphics engine too much.
Baddies will attempt to eliminate you definitively (as they always
do.....) so you should be prepared.
From the technical point of view this is an attempt at the
creation of something which looks like a multi-floor building
but without any use of 'false' teleporters to create the illusion.
The ending is also a 'new' idea.
